Orbital nodes
Eclipses require the Sun, Earth, and Moon to line up near the points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic plane.
Eclipse field guide
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's shadow falls on Earth. Total, annular, hybrid, and partial cases depend on angular size, distance, node geometry, and observer location.
Geometry
Eclipses require the Sun, Earth, and Moon to line up near the points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic plane.
The Sun is near a lunar node roughly every 173 days, creating short windows where solar and lunar eclipses can occur.
Similar eclipse geometry repeats after about 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours, but the visibility zone shifts westward.
A total eclipse occurs inside the lunar umbra; an annular eclipse occurs when the antumbra reaches Earth.
Direct solar viewing requires certified solar filtration. The page is a planning and geometry guide, not an observing-safety substitute.
The catalog region below uses the greatest-eclipse point and broad longitude band; local contact times vary across the path.

Animation controls
Use the model to see the Sun, Earth, Moon, orbital tilt, and shadow cones. The animation is educational scale, not a literal size-and-distance rendering, because real lunar distance would make the shadow geometry too small for classroom reading.
100-year forecast
Table covers solar eclipses from 2026 May 12 through 2126 Dec 31. Times are UTC at greatest eclipse; region is a broad path cue derived from the greatest-eclipse latitude and longitude.

Rows are sorted by greatest-eclipse UTC. Local clock time, weather, horizon altitude, and exact visibility require a location-specific observer calculation.
Research use
The type column separates total, annular, hybrid, partial, and penumbral geometry before interpreting magnitude or duration.
Use UTC for mission planning and then convert to local civil time only after selecting the observer site or target region.
A single region label cannot replace a detailed path map; it is an index for where to start deeper local planning.
Use the space dynamics page when the question becomes nodes, angular momentum, orbital inclination, and conic-section reasoning.
Mathematical model
Eclipse diagrams are built from line-of-centers, angular size, and shadow-cone geometry. They are not copied from eclipse artwork.
The apparent size of Sun, Earth, or Moon is computed from physical radius R and observer distance d.
Umbra length follows similar triangles. This proves shadow shape comes from geometry.
Solar and lunar eclipses require near alignment of Sun, Earth, and Moon. The diagram encodes that alignment rather than decorative overlap.
Verification standard: the rendered object must be reproducible from stated equations, catalog parameters, or explicit geometric transforms. Visual reference images may inform presentation only; they are not the source of orbital positions, field vectors, accretion-disk gradients, timing, or engineering layout.
Limitations: browser scenes may use bounded scale, compressed distances, simplified two-body dynamics, schematic transfer curves, or educational approximations where full numerical ephemerides, CFD, finite-element models, or general-relativistic ray tracing are outside the page scope. Those simplifications are part of the model contract, not hidden image-based construction.
